In many cases buying a second-hand car is the best option for many drivers for a lot of reasons:
- First of all, there are tons of second-hand cars alot cheaper (30-50% of their out of factory value) just 4-5 years old that behave and have the characteristics of the new car for the 3rd of a price;
- There are cars that aren't sold as new anymore but may have a better design than the cars that are at the time in the new car market;
- Of course some of them may be purchased as an investment since some specific models are suspected to become wanted models in the next decades, just like the 1962 Ferrari GTO250 did;
...now the most important 11 things when buying a second-hand vehicle are:
When you go for a testdrive:
- when buying a second-hand vehicle you have to make sure that the steering wheel is not rotating just by himself when driving 10-30 mph, this means that the wheels are not round anymore;
- when braking the vehicle must decelerate smoothly without frequent (oscilations) peaks of deceleration;
- the oil shouldn't be fresh, this can happens when the seller wants to hide that he is selling a vehicle with an almost broken engine;
- if the vehicle has rust is not always a problem, the problem is when the parts that you can't change are rusted, parts like chasis, luggage compartment, under the floor carpets, on the side skirts- these are places that you really don't want to have rust;
- you should check every lock to make sure that they are all in a good state;
- you have to estimate the mileage of the vehicle, for example a 50 000 mile vehicle should NOT have it's seat's material broken, scratched interior plastics...etc.
- if the vehicle has a visible or known problem you can compare it with other vehicles and you can look for how much money you can replace the problematic part. Prices for Vehicle gadgets and accessories
- you should negotiate for every aspect of the vehicle even if it's something that doesn't boder you
